The fall of Kurakhove, an important logistics center, is a major blow for Ukraine.

After taking control of Kurakhov, Russian forces will focus on capturing the towns of Toretsk and Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region, while continuing to advance towards Pokrovks.

The pace of the Russian offensive accelerated in the second half of last year and, especially from August onwards, territorial losses increased month by month. In November, Ukrainian armed forces lost 610 square kilometers of territory, or 20.3 square kilometers per day, in their clashes with Russian troops.

The biggest territorial losses were in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Kharkov. Ukraine lost more than 3,600 square kilometers of territory in 2024, compared to the 540 square kilometers it lost control of a year earlier and the 430 square kilometers it managed to liberate from Russian occupation, according to data from a military analysis platform.
