Last Friday, January 3, a Russian submarine was spotted by the Portuguese army in “its exclusive economic zone”.
Portugal, after issuing a report, reinforced security and surveillance in the area. The Novorossiysk, a diesel and electric attack submarine, headed for France. According to L’Indépendant, the Russian warship was heading towards the coast of Brittany.
Last September, the submarine had already been identified in the opposite direction, heading towards the Mediterranean. It was reportedly heading towards Tartous, a Syrian port where a major Russian base is located.
However, it should be noted that it’s common to spot Russian warships in French waters. The Novorossiysk had already been identified off the coast of Brittany in October 2023.
