On the battlefield, Ukrainians and Russians are using ceativity to surprise the enemy. On the Ukrainian side, it’s worn-out fishing nets.
This is a rather surprising and inexpensive defense solution against Russian drones. Zelensky’s armed forces, as reported by Frontliner, the Ukrainian reporting platform, are deploying old fishing nets from the Netherlands to protect their equipment and positions on the front line. Several hundred tons of these nets have already been delivered to Ukraine via the “Volonter” foundation.
One of the members of “Volonter”, Igor Bondartschuk, emphasizes: “We convinced the Dutch partners to give the fishing nets to Ukraine for free. We only have to bear the logistics costs.” These unusual protective nets are used like traditional nets: they’re used to cover and camouflage trenches and military equipment, in order to protect them from attacks by Russian drones.
According to Frontliner, thanks to fishing nets, drones or projectiles dropped can be intercepted but also sent back. “Tanks and armored vehicles, when covered with such nets, are no longer accessible to Russian attacks,” specifies a manager of the foundation. Be careful, however, the installation of these nets must in no way hinder the freedom of movement of the fighters or cause discomfort during shooting. Thus, as a Ukrainian soldier reports to Frontliner, the most advanced positions are less protected.
