NASA has released an impressive video on its social media showing the eye of Hurricane Milton from space, captured during the afternoon hours.
The images show the magnitude and power of this system approaching Florida, where it threatens to unleash hurricane-force winds, torrential rains and flooding of up to 9 feet.
Preparations in Florida for Milton’s arrival
U.S. authorities and Tampa Mayor Jane Castor have issued multiple alerts for the population to evacuate at-risk areas in an effort to prevent loss of life.
Throughout the day, emergency measures have been reinforced for the most vulnerable areas, especially those near bodies of water.
It is expected to generate a storm surge that will impact Tampa Bay, posing a serious risk to those remaining in the region. President Joe Biden has also urged residents to evacuate, calling Milton an extremely dangerous hurricane.
Milton regains category 5 status
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported in its most recent bulletin that Hurricane Milton has regained the strength of a Category 5 cyclone .
With sustained winds of 270 km/h and gusts reaching 320 km/h, Milton is moving with fury, although it has already left the coasts of the Mexican Caribbean without any major damage reported.
The state of Florida is on high alert as the hurricane approaches with devastating force that has authorities and the population in a state of extreme caution.
