Six migrants rescued on the Rio Grande, including three Hondurans
Mexican authorities rescued six “foreigners in vulnerable situations” in two operations carried out on the Rio Bravo in the municipality of Piedras Negras , in the state of Coahuila, on the border with the United States, the National Migration Institute (INM) reported on Monday.
In a brief information card, the organization specified that in one of the cases, the Beta Group rescued five people who were located on an islet in the Rio Bravo, known as the Rio Grande in the United States .
Among those rescued were two women from Nicaragua, another from Honduras and two minors, also from Honduras.
In the other case, a person from Nicaragua with a motor disability was located at a point known as Isla del Mundo.
“The person was assisted after showing signs of hypothermia and was taken by a Red Cross ambulance to a hospital for medical evaluation,” the INM said.
According to their testimony, they were trying to cross into US territory when they were repelled with tear gas by the authorities on the US side , which left them stranded in the river and in a high-risk situation.
Migrant arrests in Mexico
The rescue comes amid complaints from migrants and human rights organizations, who have accused the INM of abuses to prevent the advance of undocumented immigrants toward the north of the country due to pressure from the United States, where President-elect Donald Trump has asked Mexico to stop the migratory “invasion.”
The Mexican government has confirmed that there has been a 75% reduction in the daily encounter of irregular migrants on the border with the United States since December 2023, based on data from the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP).
But Mexico detected a record of more than 925,000 irregular migrants from January to August, a year-on-year increase of almost 132% , according to the government’s Migration Policy Unit.
