Slovakia prime minister insists on retaliatory measures against Ukraine
Robert Fico also proposed a new date and venue for a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Fico reported that he had had a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during which the issue of gas supplies was discussed. He also expressed concern about Ukraine’s decision to halt the transit of Russian gas from January 1, 2025, which he said would cause “significant harm to Slovakia and the European Union”.
“During the conversation, I also made it known that we had proposed to hold a joint meeting with Mr. Zelensky on Tuesday January 21 in Davos, at the World Economic Forum, where we will both be present,” added the Prime Minister.
He added that the Davos meeting could potentially determine the future of relations with Ukraine, but “Zelensky has not responded to this proposal”.
For his part, the Ukrainian president turned to the opposition in Slovakia, and to Michal Šimečka, to whom he said that Ukraine was ready to help Slovakia with energy security, but in return expected “important signals”, such as support for NATO and EU membership.
