A group of students from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom made an unusual discovery while examining the corpse of a 78-year-old man donated to science.
During the autopsy , future doctors found that the man suffered from triphallia , a rare deformity characterized by the presence of three penises. This finding is the second documented case of this condition in the world.
The case study was published in the Journal of Medical Case Reports , detailing that only one of the three penises was functional, while the other two were attached to the scrotal sac and one of them lacked a urethra.
Experts believe the man was never aware of his condition and may have experienced health problems related to his abnormality, such as urinary tract infections, erectile dysfunction or difficulties conceiving.
Are there any more reports of this condition?
Triphallia is an extremely rare condition, much less common than diphallia, which affects one in six million male newborns .
Nearly 100 cases of diphallia have been recorded throughout medical history, but this is only the second confirmed case of triphallia. The first case was discovered in 2021 in a three-month-old Iraqi baby , whose extra penises also lacked a urethra.
