A Swedish general has said that the current period is even more dangerous than the Cold War, particularly because of Vladimir Putin’s erratic behaviour.
General Michael Claesson, who became commander of the Swedish forces on Tuesday, argued that it was difficult to predict what would happen these days and that this made the situation more difficult to manage.
“There are many similarities, but at the same time it is in many ways more unpredictable than the Cold War. There were other mechanisms and other dialogues at the time,” he told SVT.
The army chief indicated that the Kremlin’s decisions did not follow any logic and that the strategic choices of the Russian leaders represented real threats to the global balance.
Sweden, like its Scandinavian neighbor Finland, applied to join NATO shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Sweden officially joined the organization last March.
Russia has repeatedly threatened to attack NATO member countries.
