Drake is switching up his look as we head into winter, but it has only provided more ammo for Kendrick Lamar fans. Over the weekend, the 6 God shared a (typically pouty) selfie on his Instagram Stories revealing that he’d cut off his cornrows, which he’d rocked since early 2022, in favor of a shorter trim.
While it marks a return to a more familiar look for Drizzy, it also appears to be inspired by a certain R&B legend he’s cited as a musical influence. In a follow-up Instagram Story, the Toronto native posted a throwback photo of Jodeci heartthrob DeVanté Swing rocking a similar haircut in his early ’90s prime. This apparent homage mattered little to fans of his fierce rival Kendrick, though, who proceeded to mock Drake on social media for abandoning his cornrows. “‘What is it? The BRAIDS’ Kendrick won, Drake cut them off,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), referencing K.Dot’s taunt on his diss song “Euphoria.” Another joked: “He got tired of us saying ‘what is it the braids?’ [crying face emoji].” Others speculated that Drake’s new R&B-friendly look means his planned collaborative album with PARTYNEXTDOOR is around the corner.

“Now with the braids gone, it’s only about time that Drake and PND drop the album,” one X post read. “NO BRAIDS= NEW ERA.” Prior to his visit to the barbers, Drizzy made plenty of headlines for his longer hair. When he unraveled his cornrows and wore his afro in two side buns with pink clips last year, the Her Loss hitmaker found himself compared to Minnie Mouse. A more recent look drew more flattering comparisons to Snoop Dogg as Drake wore his hair in two braided pigtails, complete with baby blue bows.
