Traveling to the United States is a dream for many, but obtaining a visa can often be a challenge. However, there is a little-known alternative that allows Mexican citizens to visit some American cities without requiring a conventional visa: the Border Crossing Card (BCC).
The Border Crossing Card is a document designed to facilitate the entry of Mexican citizens into specific areas of the United States near the border.
This document allows for short visits of up to 30 days within delimited areas, making it an ideal option for quick trips or for personal reasons.
Although similar to the visa process, the BCC has specific requirements and offers an easier way to explore certain regions of the neighboring country.
How to obtain the Border Crossing Card?
To apply for the BCC, the following requirements must be met:
- Be a citizen and resident of Mexico.
- Have a valid Mexican passport.
- Meet the eligibility criteria for B1/B2 visas.
- Demonstrate strong ties to Mexico, such as employment, family or property.
- Schedule and attend an interview at the U.S. embassy or consulate.
- The process begins with the submission of Form DS-156 and the payment of a fee of approximately $185 dollars (around 4,000 lempiras).
Cities you can visit with the BCC
The Border Crossing Card allows entry to certain specific areas in the U.S. border states:
- California: Within a 25-mile radius of the border, you can visit cities like San Ysidro and Calexico.
- Arizona: The range is wider, with a 120-kilometer radius that includes cities like Nogales and Yuma.
- New Mexico: The permitted zone extends up to 55 miles from the border or to Interstate 10, with cities such as Las Cruces included.
- Texas: Access is permitted within 40 kilometers of the border, highlighting destinations such as El Paso.
