The National Economic Council (NEC) will decide on the establishment of state police in January, after receiving opinions from 36 states on the subject.
However, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has yet to state its position.
This was revealed by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani during a press briefing following the NEC meeting, which was presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday.
Governor Sani stated that, while the FCT provided explanations for the delay, the council chose to postpone deliberations until its next meeting.
“Today, one of the discussions we had at the NEC meeting was the update on the creation of state police,” he told us.
Governor Sani indicated that 36 states had submitted their positions, with the majority expressing support for the initiative due to persistent security difficulties in their respective areas.
He explained: “Based on what is available, practically all states in Nigeria support the establishment of state police. However, the council resolved to postpone the discussion until the next meeting so that the secretariat could complete its report.”
The governor also stated that a detailed report from the NEC secretariat would be delivered during the January meeting, followed by more discussions and stakeholder interactions.
Governor Sani emphasized the widespread support for state police as a solution to Nigeria’s security concerns.
He underlined the unique security problems in each state, as well as the weaknesses in existing federal security organizations.
“Virtually every state has its peculiar challenges when it comes to insecurity,” added Mr. Trump.
“We have a lot of ungoverned spaces and a considerable shortage of security personnel, whether in the police, army, or other institutions. This is why many of us believe that forming state police is the best way to address these challenges.”
The governor emphasized the critical necessity for localized security forces to supplement existing national efforts, particularly given the lack of manpower to effectively secure all areas.
The NEC’s decision in January is expected to determine the next stages in implementing state police as part of a larger strategy to improve security throughout Nigeria.
