This action is a component of the endeavor to fully eradicate the sect’s influence in the area and build on the achievements of Operation Forest Sanity III.
On behalf of the Theatre Commander, Major General Oluyinka Soyele, the troops in Sokoto were addressed by Brigadier General Ibikunle Ajose, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 8 Division Nigerian Army and Commander of Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
Ajose urged the soldiers to remain professional and rigorously follow the rules of engagement during the mission in his speech on Friday.
“You were chosen for this operation because of your advanced training and expertise. Ajose stated, “The country is depending on you to stop the Lakurawas sect’s activities and bring peace back to the impacted communities.” He also stressed the need to safeguard the lives and property of innocent civilians.
This deployment follows previous operations under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which targeted the sect’s hideouts in villages like Kaideji, Sama, Kadidda, and Dancha in the Illela, Tangaza, and Binji Local Government Areas, as well as in areas like Rumji Dutse, Sarma, Tsauna, and Magara forests.
22 sect camps were destroyed, several members were eliminated, and weapons and ammunition, including four rifles, 409 rounds of PKT 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and 94 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, were recovered during the previous operations.
To maintain these gains and step up efforts to maintain peace and security in the area, the Special Operations Brigade has been assigned.
