A thrilling end to series three of Welcome to Wrexham could be on the cards, with the Red Dragons prepared to take in “crazy” final day drama.
Phil Parkinson’s squad would prefer to avoid taking things down to the wire, as they target a top-three finish in League Two, but they have grown accustomed to delivering thrilling cliffhangers for the award-winning documentary series that follows their every move.
George Evans has said of Wrexham’s promotion charge hanging on a final day clash with current table-toppers Stockport, which could see Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney pay another visit to SToK Racecourse: “I hope no but football works in crazy ways, so fingers crossed. But if it does, we will be in the right frame of mind to do it on the last day. It’s exciting for a neutral but we want to make sure we get our business done as early as possible. We need to get in the right mind set again, bounce back and make sure we get three points and that will put us in good stead.”
Wrexham suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Doncaster last time out and now have five games left in which to clinch an automatic promotion place. Evans added on a thrilling fight to the finish: “There’s going to be a lot of twists and turns now. But we are in control of our fixtures at the moment. We need to do better and we will be. We cannot think of anything else other than playing the next game. We have a big game at Colchester. If we take care of our business – that’s all we can do – it will be enough. We need to focus on ourselves, dust ourselves down and make sure it [defeat] does not happen again.”
Between their trip to Colchester on Saturday and home date with Stockport on April 27, Wrexham also have dates with Crawley, Forest Green and Crewe to take in before their dramatic 2023-24 campaign comes to a close.
