According to Greenly, a Paris-based accounting firm, TikTok’s emissions in the United States, United Kingdom, and France in 2023 will be approximately 7.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), which is more than the combined emissions of Twitter and Snapchat that year.
TikTok, with over a billion users globally, pollutes twice as much as Instagram, despite the fact that the latter is located in the United States.
TikTok’s significant carbon footprint can be attributed in large part to its operational model, which is based on an algorithm designed to keep users engaged and consuming material for extended periods of time.
Instagram users spend an average of 30 minutes per day on the app, whereas TikTok users spend approximately 45 minutes per day on the video-sharing platform.
Greenly also noted that TikTok users rank as the second-largest CO2 emitters per minute of usage, just behind YouTube. One minute on TikTok produces an average of 2.921 grams of CO2e, compared to 2.923 grams per minute on YouTube.
