To be effective, any force deployed in Ukraine must include US troops
Otherwise, there could be a split within NATO, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Davos.
According to him, Ukraine’s European allies don’t have enough troops to constitute a real deterrent force for Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, and any other solution would risk causing divisions within the NATO alliance.
“It can’t be done without the United States. Even if some European friends think it’s possible, no, it’s not. Nobody will take a risk without the United States,” he said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Mr. Zelenskyy reiterated that negotiations with Russia couldn’t take place without Ukraine’s participation.
“We don’t want this to be done behind Ukraine’s back. I’m convinced that the United States won’t do it, although I’m not sure it hasn’t been the case before. I’m not just talking about the United States, but also about certain European partners,” said the Ukrainian President.
In addition, Zelensky saw US President Donald Trump’s pledge to increase US energy exports as a way of putting pressure on Moscow, and the upcoming talks as an opportunity for Trump to demonstrate US strength.
“Ending the war should be a victory for Trump, not Putin.”
