On Wednesday, October 2, around 8 a.m., there was a near-miss at Miyazaki Airport in Japan. An American bomb from World War II exploded near a runway.
66 flights were cancelled, the area was completely evacuated and, fortunately, no injuries were reported. According to local authorities, the American bomb caused a crater 7 metres in diameter and 1 metre deep on the runway. Just seconds before the device, a relic of the Second World War, exploded, a plane had just taken off.
The Japan Self-Defense Forces’ bomb disposal unit has been mobilized to the scene to conduct the investigation. The area is being closely monitored to ensure everyone’s safety.
In 2011, two unexploded US bombs were discovered at the airport, which served as an air base for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Another was found in 2021.
