Trump peace plan is unlikely according to a European general
The head of the EU Military Committee, General Robert Brieger, said that a UN mission made up of soldiers from different countries could enforce the ceasefire in Ukraine.
“A possible UN-mandated mission could include not only Europeans, but also soldiers from the South or, for example, the Caucasus. Soldiers from the European Union would undoubtedly be able to make a significant contribution,” said the general.
He also believes that EU countries could provide significant forces to monitor the ceasefire. However, he estimates that monitoring the demilitarized zone along the front line would require a military presence in the order of five figures, so in the tens of thousands of soldiers.
“This means that they would also have the right to enforce the ceasefire with weapons and air support,” he added, noting that ”for now, this all sounds very theoretical, but such a scenario could be implemented”.
The general also considers US President Donald Trump’s proposed plan to bring the war in Ukraine to a swift end unlikely.
“To put it simply, this would have the advantage of putting an end to the deaths. However, the disadvantage would be that the conflict would continue and, in the worst case, could last for decades, for example, like the situation between North and South Korea,” said Brieger.
