Trump sends 2 million federal workers email to resign
Two million American federal workers have received an email in their inbox with a proposal to resign.
US President Donald Trump wants to significantly reduce the federal government’s civil service. On Tuesday, some two million federal civil servants received an email offering them a proposal to resign but still be paid until September.
Those wishing to resign have until 6 February to resign by simply sending an e-mail with ‘resign’ in the subject line.
The e-mail, which was sent by the Office of Personnel Management, also stated that those who do continue to work for the government will have to come to the office five days a week and will therefore not be able to work remotely. All federal workers were also told that they have no guarantee that they will be able to keep their jobs in the near future.
The offer reminds the New York Times of the proposal Elon Musk made to Twitter employees when he bought the social network in late 2022. They too could resign in the same way, but were then only paid for three months.
