Donald Trump has stated that he understands why Vladimir Putin is so strongly opposed to NATO membership for Ukraine.
According to Kiev, Putin would be less aggressive if Ukraine were a NATO member, but an official invitation to join has yet to materialise. Donald Trump believes that NATO membership of Ukraine would be a provocation to Russia and would involve NATO directly in the conflict between the two countries.
“Russia – for many, many years, long before Putin – said, ‘You could never have Nato involved with Ukraine.’ And somewhere along the line Biden said, ‘No. They should be able to join Nato.’ Well, then Russia has somebody right on their doorstep, and I could understand their feelings about that”, Trump stated.
Ukrainian President Zelensky responded to these statements by saying no hasty conclusions should be drawn about US policy. ‘We should do everything possible so that Ukraine has sufficient security guarantees to stop Putin,’ Zelensky said.
