At a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago residence after Congress certified his presidential victory, Donald Trump noted that Ukraine and Russia continued to lose many people and stressed that if he had been president, “this war would never have happened”.
He also noted that Russian President Putin wanted to meet with him and that this meeting could take place after the inauguration. “I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to meet before January 20,” said the US president-elect.
Donald Trump also said he understood that Ukraine’s NATO membership prospects were “a big part of the problem” for Russia, and accused the Biden administration of taking the wrong approach to the matter.
Although he was due to travel to Kiev to meet Ukrainian leaders at the beginning of January, Donald Trump’s chosen US envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, announced that he wouldn’t travel to Ukraine before the inauguration of the US president-elect, scheduled for January 20.
