It cannot be ruled out that a Russian missile strike on Odesa yesterday that hit while Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Greek PM were nearby had targeted the two leaders, a top Ukrainian presidential adviser has said.
The Nordic country is now officially a member of the Western military alliance.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has been in Washington today to hand over final documents on the matter.
It means that should Sweden be attacked, other members of the alliance will be obligated to protect it.
Speaking after Sweden’s accession, US secretary of state Antony Blinken said the NATO alliance is now stronger and larger than it’s ever been.
Meanwhile, NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg hailed the move as “historic”.
“After over 200 years of non-alignment Sweden now enjoys the protection granted under Article 5, the ultimate guarantee of Allies’ freedom and security,” Mr Stoltenberg said in a statement on X.
“Sweden brings with it capable armed forces and a first-class defence industry. Sweden’s accession makes NATO stronger, Sweden safer and the whole Alliance more secure,” he added.
