What’s it called? The Black Widow 2. A river kamikaze drone capable of countering Russian advances on the islands of the Dnieper River.
The machine was developed in 2023 at the request of the Ukrainian army. Its developers praise its “espionage and destruction potential”, making it “a formidable weapon”. According to them, the Black Widow 2 “can easily sink Russian ships”.
According to the manufacturers behind the machine, a single unit would cost less than 100,000 hryvnias, or 2,300 euros. Currently, two Ukrainian armed forces brigades are carrying out military trials of the Black Widow 2, designed to perform combat, reconnaissance and surveillance missions in difficult conditions, reports L’Indépendant.
At just one meter long and weighing 8kg, the small unmanned boat would be extremely easy to maneuver in narrow environments, such as river canals. The Black Widow 2 could be operational for several hours, and remain in standby mode if necessary, waiting for a target. The fearsome new weapon would also be capable of carrying a 3kg charge, enough to destroy small boats and speedboats, says L’Indépendant.
