In an unusual incident, a 15-year-old boy suffered a serious injury after being pierced in the skull by a fish known as “chunte” or “cow fish,” while he was enjoying a day at the beach in El Porvenir, Atlántida, in the Caribbean of Honduras.
The young man, who was swimming, said he suddenly felt the fish embed itself in his head, leaving witnesses and rescuers stunned.
Images captured on the beach showed members of the Fire Department arriving quickly to the scene to assist the minor.
Fortunately, the young man is out of danger, authorities reported, but the incident has caused great curiosity and concern, especially during the Morazanic Week holiday, when many families flock to the beaches.
The Fire Department, through its spokesman, Joaquín Castellanos, provided a series of precautionary recommendations in which it warns bathers “to avoid swimming in uncrowded areas or in places where they may suspect the presence of dangerous animals.”
“These fish, which tend to seek refuge in calm and solitary waters, can be difficult to detect,” he illustrated.
Experts are calling on people to be cautious and respect warnings when enjoying the beaches.
