UPDATE: At least 25 survivors in passenger plane crash
Heavy fog diverted the flight to Kazakhstan’s Aktaou, but the passenger plane crashed near the city of Aktaou in western Kazakhstan.
There were believed to be 72 people on board. There was initially some uncertainty about the number of passengers. But Kazakhstan’s Kazinform news agency now reports that the plane had 72 people – 67 passengers and five crew members – on board. Several of them reportedly survived the plane crash. The exact number of passengers and crew members has yet to be confirmed by authorities. At least 25 people are said to have survived the crash, according to authorities.
Images on social media show the plane flying steeply downward, crashing and exploding. Photos show debris from the plane spreading across a rural area in Aktaou.
The cause of the crash is unknown for now.
