“Depart Syria if possible,” the embassy said on X, advising US citizens who are unable to do so to “develop contingency plans for emergency situations and be prepared to shelter in place for extended periods.”
Following the overthrow of former President Bashar Assad’s regime, U.S. officials have confirmed continued engagement with major rebel factions attempting to form a transitional government. The future course of US-Syrian relations is still unknown, though.
The most well-known of the rebel coalitions, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has connections to al-Qaeda and is still classified as a terrorist group by the US and the EU.
The United States is still offering a $10 million reward for its leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, also known by his alias Abu Mohammed al-Jolani.
The US government “is unable to provide any routine or emergency consular services to US citizens in Syria,” the embassy emphasized.
It advised anyone in need of urgent help to get in touch with the US Embassy in the nation they intend to visit.
The embassy also urged Americans in Syria to make sure they have all required travel documents on hand and to be “prepared to shelter in place should the situation deteriorate.”
