Violeta Parra’s children have kept alive the essence of Chilean folk music and the “Nueva Canción Chilena”, a movement to which Violeta contributed enormously.
Isabel and Angel Parra
The marriage between Violeta Parra and Luis Cereceda Arenas , whom she married in 1938, gave rise to the birth of Isabel and Ángel Parra, two key figures in the Chilean music scene.
Isabel Cereceda Parra , born in 1939, adopted her mother’s surname and became a prominent folklorist and singer-songwriter. Throughout her career, she has released more than twenty solo albums and has collaborated with many artists. In addition, she formed a duo with her brother Ángel, consolidating herself as one of the main voices of the New Chilean Song.
Ángel Parra , born in 1943, also chose to use his mother’s surname and stood out as a singer-songwriter, writer and crucial member of the Chilean musical movement.
His extensive discography and his constant struggle to keep his mother’s legacy alive positioned him as an important figure in Latin American music. Ángel passed away in 2017 at the age of 73, after a battle with lung cancer.
Violeta Parra had two other children: Carmen Luisa Arce Parra and Rosa Clara Arce Parra, the fruit of her marriage to Luis Arce Leyton , whom she married in 1949.
Carmen Luisa was born that same year and shared with her mother some of the most crucial moments of her life, including periods in Paris and the dramatic days before Violeta’s suicide. Carmen died in 2007 at the age of 58, also due to cancer.
On the other hand, Rosa Clara , born in 1952, had a tragic fate. She died at the age of two, in 1954, which was a hard blow for the family.
Violeta Parra’s living daughter
Today, Isabel Parra is Violeta Parra’s only living daughter and remains an active figure in the music world. Her commitment to preserving Chilean folklore and her legacy as part of the Nueva Canción Chilena have ensured that her mother’s work, and her own, remain relevant to current generations.
