British actress and Harry Potter star Maggie Smith has died in the last few hours. Here are more details about her death.
It was recently reported that British actress Maggie Smith has died at the age of 89. She leaves behind a great legacy in Spanish television, as well as in multiple film productions, including the famous Harry Potter saga .
The statement issued by two of her children announces the death of their mother, who died in a hospital on the morning of September 27 , surrounded by friends and family until the day of her last breath.
After her death, Maggie leaves behind an unforgettable legacy in film, television and theatre, as well as in the hearts of all her fans who, for decades, enjoyed her characters in acclaimed productions on the big and small screen.
What did Maggie Smith die of?
So far, the cause of her death has not been revealed ; however, throughout her life, Smith suffered from two serious illnesses , one of which was cancer diagnosed in 2008. Even so, the actress overcame the disease after several sessions of radiotherapy.
In addition, at the age of 54 , she was diagnosed with Graves-Basedow autoimmune disease, which is an inflammation of the thyroid gland that affects 2% of women.
She said she had to spend 12 months locked up at home undergoing radiation therapy and eye surgery to stop the swelling and pain in her eyes.
Who are Maggie’s children?
Smith was married twice, to actor Robert Stephens (the couple divorced in 1974) and again to playwright Beverly Cross, from 1975 until her death in 1998.
The British actress had two sons: Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens . Both have pursued acting careers, just like their mother. Chris Larkin is known for his work in film and television, while Toby Stephens has starred in theater and television series, including his role in “Black Sails.”
Both actors took it upon themselves to spread the news of their mother’s death in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith . She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September. An intensely private person, she was ultimately with friends and family.”
