Erik ten Hag lost his cool in his post-match press conference after Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool.

WHAT HAPPENED?
Things got heated in the United coach’s press conference after the Red Devils were outclassed by Liverpool at Old Trafford. Ten Hag dismissed questions about the “familiar mistakes” that have plagued his team and insisted United will improve after suffering back-to-back defeats in the Premier League.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Four games into the 2024-25 season, Ten Hag already finds himself under enormous pressure. Last season’s FA Cup final victory saved the Dutchman from losing his job but INEOS expects the head coach to close the gap to Manchester City and Co. So far that target isn’t being met, with United losing to City in the Community Shield before defeats against Brighton and Liverpool.

WHAT TEN HAG SAID
“We are building a new team. We will build this new team,” Ten Hag told reporters. “We had two players first start of the season. We will improve. By the end of the season, I am quite confident again. We will have a big chance to win another trophy.”
When familiar errors were pointed out to the 54-year-old, he replied: “Are you sure? We wouldn’t win trophies otherwise. After City, we won the most trophies in English football [since Ten Hag’s arrival in 2022]. I am sorry for you.”
Ten Hag was then asked to explain how summer signing Manuel Ugarte will change things.
“It’s not like I’m Harry Potter. That is what you have to acknowledge,” he replied.
WHAT NEXT FOR TEN HAG?
The international break has come at the right time for Ten Hag. Some will feel that United were unlucky to lose to Brighton after Alejandro Garnacho had a goal disallowed, but there can be no complaints about the Liverpool defeat. The Red Devils were second-best for 90 minutes and the Dutchman has plenty of work to do to put things right before his side return against Southampton on September 14.
