Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed on the night of Saturday, October 5, the death of Ifigenia Martínez at the age of 94 , however, the causes are unknown, but it is known that she had health problems.
The death of the President of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Deputies occurred days after having presided over her last public act, handing over the presidential sash to Sheinbaum.
The new president of Mexico wrote on her X account: ” On June 2, I voted for Ifigenia Martinez, a consistent woman of convictions. On October 1, I received the presidential sash from her hands. Today she left us. I send her family, colleagues and friends all my love and solidarity. Farewell, dear teacher Ifigenia .”
Ifigenia Martínez was an important figure in the politics of the Aztec country, however, little is known about her private life, but it is public knowledge that she was married to the economist Alfredo Navarrete Romero.
Who is Alfredo Navarrete Romero?
The two are known to have met while studying at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where they shared a special interest in economics.
After completing their studies, the couple moved to Boston, United States, so that Alfredo could pursue a doctorate at Harvard University. Ifigenia also became the first Mexican woman to obtain a master’s degree and a doctorate from the institution.
Alfredo Navarrete Romero’s Distinctions
According to a book from the Virtual Legal Library of the UNAM Institute of Legal Research, Romero received several distinctions throughout his professional life.
These distinctions include: National Prize in Economics, awarded by the Bank of Mexico (1951), Knight of the Legion of Honor, France (1968), in addition to having been a professor at the Center for Latin American Monetary Studies and lecturer.
