Who is Hernán Domingo Ojeda López: what is known about El Mero Mero and his family background
Recently, Hernán Domingo Ojeda López, nicknamed ‘El Mero Mero’, was arrested in Badiraguato, Sinaloa, in an operation that highlights the Mexican government’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the country.
Identified as the uncle of Ovidio Guzmán López , known as ‘El Ratón’ , a prominent leader of the Sinaloa Cartel and extradited to the United States in September 2023, Ojeda López has been identified by authorities as a key player in the trafficking of fentanyl to the US market.
The arrest took place on December 16, 2024, thanks to the collaboration of various security forces, including the Army and the National Guard. During the arrest, authorities found a handgun, 800,000 pesos in cash, and two bags containing fentanyl pills in his possession.
These elements not only reinforce the accusations of organized crime against him, but also underline the growing concern about the expansion of trafficking of this powerful drug, which has been responsible for numerous deaths in the United States.
An unknown face in the drug trade
Despite his recent arrest, Ojeda López was not widely known in the drug world before this operation. Experts on the subject have expressed surprise at the relevance he has suddenly acquired, suggesting that his arrest could reveal more about the internal structures of the Sinaloa Cartel.
Authorities have described him as a “generator of violence” involved in drug trafficking logistics from Culiacán, his hometown, to abroad.
Family and criminal context
Ojeda’s family background is complex and mixes connections within drug trafficking. Although he shares a surname with Griselda Guadalupe López Pérez, Ovidio’s mother, there is no direct relationship with Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán , Ovidio’s father and one of the most infamous drug traffickers in Mexico.
This relationship, however, highlights the intricate family network that has nurtured and sustained the Sinaloa Cartel over the years.
The capture of Ojeda López also occurs in a context of growing violence in Sinaloa, marked by internal struggles between various factions of the cartel following the extradition of Ovidio.
This climate of instability has complicated the situation in the region, exacerbating tensions and, in turn, public security operations.
