WHO Plans Adjustments as US Prepares to Exit
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that it is reassessing its operations as the United States, its largest donor, moves to withdraw.
The decision follows President Donald Trump’s executive order to end the country’s involvement with the agency.
To cope with reduced funding, the WHO is freezing new hires except for critical roles and cutting travel expenses.
Staff meetings will now default to virtual formats, with in-person gatherings requiring special approval. Technical support will focus only on essential missions.
The US contributed $1.3 billion to the WHO’s 2022-2023 budget, making up over 16% of its funding.
The withdrawal could impact ongoing programmes, as the US still owes over $260 million in unpaid membership fees for 2024 and 2025.
WHO officials expressed concern about losing access to vital health data from the US, including updates on outbreaks like bird flu.
The agency emphasized the global impact of the withdrawal, noting that health systems worldwide rely on shared information to monitor and address threats.
The WHO hopes the US will reconsider its decision and is open to discussions to preserve the partnership.
