Why Rob McElhenney & Ryan Reynolds believe Wrexham can ‘win the league’ as Hollywood co-owners refuse to let Red Dragons become a ‘middling club’

Having bounced straight through League Two on the back of winning the National League title in record-breaking style, plenty suggested before a ball was kicked in 2024-25 that a season of consolidation in the third tier of English football would be no bad thing for the Red Dragons.

  A meteoric rise shows no sign of slowing down, though, with Phil Parkinson guiding his side to the top of the League One table through five unbeaten fixtures. Hollywood co-owners McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have continued to make the funds available that allow Wrexham to be fiercely competitive.

  • WHAT MCELHENNEY SAID

    More ambitious targets are being put in place, with McElhenney telling the Men In Blazers podcast of why a historic third successive promotion could be on the cards: “We talk about it all the time – the marathon vs the sprint. Our main goal, even though we talk about promotion all the time, is to build a sustainable club. We want a sustainable club that will exist for generations. To do that, you always run the risk of scaling too fast. That said, I just don’t think I have it in my blood, I don’t think I have it in my genetics, to slow down and to just simply invest in a middling club. I want to go out and win every single match and, luckily, the players feel the same way.

    “It’s really funny to listen to all the prognosticators and Vegas, all the odds makers and all the sports book people, who really had us about mid-table. Everybody I talked to, even supporters, would say that they would be very, very happy with squeaking into the play-offs – that would be considered a win. I think it’s always good to under promise and over deliver. That said, I just can’t help it when I really engage in either a mental model of what the club is going to be this year or even a conversation with a supporter, I don’t know how else to go out but to try and win. Fortunately enough, the players do not listen to any of the prognosticators or the supporters or their family members, they go out and win. They believe they can win the league.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR WREXHAM?

    With momentum continuing to build behind them, Wrexham have every reason to believe that they can compete for a place in the Championship. That quest will continue next Monday when taking in a trip to big-spending fellow promotion hopefuls Birmingham – who have NFL legend Tom Brady as one of their investors.
