What began as an act of good faith turned into a complicated legal situation for a resident of the municipality of Tehuacán, in the state of Puebla, Mexico.
This is about Verónica Inés Barbosa Pérez, who together with her husband on October 18, found an iPhone cell phone lying on the street and decided to look for the owner to return it.
However, the next day, Veronica was arrested at her workplace on charges of being linked to a kidnapping case.
According to relatives, after finding the device near 22nd Street in the Santa María neighborhood, Verónica wrote in a WhatsApp group of neighbors with the intention of locating the owner.
In his message, he said: “Good evening, I found an iPhone and I want to return it, so if anyone has lost a phone, please call me and I will gladly return it, but first you have to give me the details so that its owner can recover it.”
That same night, Veronica used Siri, the iPhone’s intelligent assistant, to call the contact registered as “Mom” on the device.
On October 19, Veronica was arrested by the police while she was at work. Her relatives claim that the authorities are unjustly accusing her of kidnapping. The accusations are apparently based on the fact that the iPhone found in her possession was allegedly used by a criminal group to contact the relatives of a person deprived of their liberty.
Veronica’s loved ones categorically deny her involvement in criminal activities and demand her immediate release. They also claim that the woman had bruises and bruises after her arrest, pointing to an alleged abuse of authority by the officers. Her husband also accuses Veronica of being arrested on October 19 but not being presented to the authorities until the following day, October 20.
This Monday, the Puebla Prosecutor’s Office will have to decide whether to formally charge Verónica with the crime or proceed with her release. Friends and family continue to call on the authorities to clarify the situation and bring justice.
The case has sparked outrage in the community and on social media, where users are expressing their solidarity with Verónica and questioning the actions of the authorities. More details about her legal situation are expected to be revealed in the coming hours.
