Salazar accused Castro of pursuing a socialist agenda, and warned that Honduras faces a grave threat under his leadership.
U.S. Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar on Wednesday harshly criticized Honduran President Xiomara Castro, whom she considers a threat to Honduras after eliminating the Extradition Treaty with the United States.
“Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, unfortunately, lives up to her last name, Castro. Fidel Castro. Honduras is, at this moment for Honduras, a threat. Because she is a socialist wolf, truly dressed as a sheep,” Salazar complained.
Salazar said that, despite having supported the extradition of former President Juan Orlando Hernández for drug trafficking, Castro now seeks to end the treaty.
“Mrs. Zelaya had no problem when former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez was extradited to the U.S. on drug trafficking charges, which is all very well, but now she wants to cancel that extradition treaty,” he said.
“And why? Because his brother-in-law, his brother-in-law, who is the secretary of Congress, Carlos Zelaya, was caught in a meeting with the Los Cachiros cartel,” he continued.
This comes amid the revelation of a 2013 video showing the president’s brother-in-law, Carlos Celaya, in a meeting with the Los Cachiros cartel, one of the most influential drug trafficking groups in Honduras.

He also criticized former Honduran Defense Secretary Jose Manuel Zelaya for meeting with Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino, calling him one of Venezuela’s top repressors.
The family’s days are numbered
Salazar warned that socialism will lead to misery and corruption in Honduras under the administration of Xiomara Castro, saying: “The Zelaya family’s days are numbered.”
The congresswoman offered her support to Hondurans in denouncing these actions and advocating for democracy and a market economy in the Central American country.
