Benito Lertxundi , a famous Spanish singer, has been one of the most prominent exponents of music in Spain since he was young . In the last few hours, he announced that, after six decades, he will retire from the stage with his last live album.
The singer-songwriter from Orio has established a remarkable legacy in music. Although he is known for being one of the few singers to sing in Basque, he started at a very young age, managing to stay in the industry through his endearing songs and compositions, in which his essence has been captured.
His career in music
He made his debut in the industry in 1967, but it was not until 1971 when he released his first full-length album, entitled Benito Lertxundi , accompanied only by his guitar. In 1975 he composed eta maita herria, üken dezadan plazera , becoming a key album in the Spaniard’s career.
Throughout his career, Benito Lertxundi has left songs that have become hymns for his fans, such as Zenbat Gera? , Erribera , Nere herriko neskatxa maite , Bizkaia maite , Itsasoari begira or Bardorba , among others. After more than 20 albums released, he has decided to say goodbye to the stage in a discreet manner, but having become a benchmark of Basque culture.
Farewell to music and the stage
The singer preceded a press conference held at the Jai Alai fronton in Gernika, where he announced his retirement after 60 years on stage. He also presented his new work, a double album of a live concert held at the same facilities on November 11, 2023.
This latest work, Gernika kontzertuan , reviews through 20 songs an emblematic career that has left classic songs of great sentimental value for a significant part of Basque society, songs that form part of the popular heritage of Basque society. The album also includes a previously unreleased song: Ez nabil ezeren bila .
It is worth mentioning that the singer does not rule out continuing to be involved in music and artistic creation in other ways. Lertxundi has said that he feels “deeply grateful” to his fans for the support and affection they have shown him over the years.
