Our current actions regarding the Bodija explosion incident — Makinde
Makinde during the GSM Media Chat on Saturday, acknowledged the destruction caused by the incident and emphasized his commitment to transparency and support for affected individuals.
It will be recalled that five persons died, 77 others sustained injury and 55 houses were damaged during the explosion that rocked Aderinola Street, Adeyi Avenue, Old Bodija, Ibadan.
A report, which comprises findings of the Medical, Security and Engineering Teams, was submitted to Makinde, in February.
While speaking on the incident on Saturday, Makinde revealed that the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) conducted a detailed evaluation of the damages, estimating losses at over N3 billion.
“The government agreed to disburse the sum to support affected individuals.”
However, the governor noted that some people later demanded N5 billion, claiming the government got money for the incident.
“I told them they don’t run the government with us, and they were part of the report,” Makinde said.
To address the concerns, he announced a scheduled meeting with stakeholders on Monday.
In addition to financial support, Makinde disclosed that contracts had been awarded to repair roads in the affected area.
“When the Bodija incident happened, we took steps immediately,” he said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to restoring normalcy.
“For those whose property was destroyed, I have a responsibility to let people know how things happened,” he said. “The victims will be supported, not compensated.”
Regarding justice, the governor assured the public that security operatives are prosecuting the case. “The will of justice takes time, but we will get justice,” he concluded.
