A Women Nearly Buried under Water after Landslide
The women asked the authorities for help so they could move to a shelter.
Three elderly Honduran women were nearly buried underground in recent hours in the Fuerzas Unidas neighborhood of Comayagüela, in the Central District, after a perimeter wall collapsed due to the heavy rains recorded in recent days.
The landslide occurred amid a severe storm in the early hours of Monday, March 5, which caused landslides and flooded several areas of Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela.
The victims described with anguish the moment the wall gave way, leaving their homes on the verge of collapse.
“We didn’t sleep last night because of the huge storm… we were trying to make sure we didn’t stay inside because it was going to destroy us,” said one of the survivors, visibly shaken.
Another woman asked the authorities for urgent help:
“I’m asking for your help because it’s an emergency, and I’m telling you from the bottom of my heart that I don’t want to be homeless and I don’t want to be buried with my family,” she said.
Rains in Honduras
The recent rains have caused extensive damage in the Central District. According to local media reports, the rainfall caused at least 22 emergencies, including fallen trees, street flooding, and damage to homes in neighborhoods such as Alameda and El Carrizal.
Municipal authorities have urged the public to remain alert and report any risky situations.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of many communities in high-risk areas, where heavy rains can trigger tragedy.
The Permanent Contingency Commission (Copeco) forecast light rain for this Monday; however, in the afternoon, the convergence of wind and moisture from the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean will generate light to moderate, scattered rain and showers with isolated thunderstorms over areas of the southwest, south, center, and east.
