For a couple of years, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, an international terrorist, lived like a god among his gullible followers.
He issued unlawful orders for the killing of Nigerian citizens, security agents, the American Ambassador, the British High Commissioner, and committed every form of terrorism, including ordering the burning of American and British Embassies. While his victims lost their lives and livelihoods, his followers cheered, hailed, and bowed before him. As he issued these unlawful orders, he proclaimed himself untouchable, and his followers reinforced that claim.
They said Nigeria would burn if the government arrested or prosecuted him. But Nigerians, standing firm against terrorism, opposed him and ensured his arrest and prosecution. Nigerians resisted the threats and blackmail from his followers who called for his pardon and release. Nigerians insisted that justice must prevail.
Today, justice has prevailed as Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court convicted him on all charges bordering on terrorism, treason, and incitement. Three of those convictions carry the death penalty.
While awaiting sentencing, I appeal to the government to intensify efforts to arrest, prosecute, and secure the conviction of the leaders and sponsors of Boko Haram, ISWAP, and the Lakurawa terrorist groups, as well as bandits, just as they did with Mr. Kanu.
