Trump fears Russian or Chinese predation
On Tuesday January 21, France’s Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, spoke to France Inter. According to him, the Trump administration is worried about the risk of “Russian or Chinese predation”.
“The question of Russian or Chinese predation is of the utmost concern to Washington,” said the French minister shortly after Donald Trump’s inauguration. Taking advantage of the event, the American president reiterated his desire to seize Greenland and the Panama Canal.
Sébastien Lecornu asserted that the “common point between the Panama Canal and Greenland” is China and “the trade war between China and the United States”. “We grew up in classrooms with Europe and Africa in the middle of our planispheres. But in Washington, the middle of the planisphere is the North Pacific, the place where the world’s three largest navies meet,” explained the politician.
According to Lecornu, Trump’s threat is serious because “by definition, you always have to take the heads of state of the great powers seriously”. Moreover, he assured us that Trump or not, the “Chinese obsession”, the “Chinese challenge”, “would have been right in front of us”.
